shegotgame: Styling the Jordan I High and V Low "All-Star" Retros

Earlier today I had the opportunity to check out the opening of the brand new Jordan Brand flagship in downtown Toronto at - and called - 306 Yonge. After a tour of the space thanks to my "influencer" relationship with MJ's brand, I was lucky to receive some great gifts. The two I want to focus on are my two pairs of kicks - because it's gotta be the shoes. Both pairs are actually grade school (GS) specific line by Jordan Brand, that comes in extended GS sizing. While these two pairs are not a pack, they share the same colorway, pattern and shimmer. 

The first pair are the Jordan I Retro High "All-Star" - colorway is wolf grey, metallic silver and white. There is a shimmer damask-style print on both uppers of each shoe. The Jordan wings logo is silver and embossed on the heel tab along with the stitched tonal Jumpman on the heel. The toe box and hell are more of a pale blue than a true wolf grey which mixes well with the textured upper. The US retail price for the Jordan I High Retro is $110.

The Jordan V Retro Low features the same style printed textile but it's all over the shoe. Black is secondary colour for the shoe instead of wolf grey, finished with an icy outsole and white midsole. There are hints of the wolf grey/pale blue color on the Jumpman branding of the shoe. The US retail price for the Jordan V Retro Low $140. 

I'm generally not a girly-girl when it comes to sparkles, but the mix of a tonal, mostly neutral color palette against the patterned textile makes fore realFor today's tour and photoshoot, I brought along my frequent collaborator, photographer and friend extraordinaire Jennifer Toole. She and I are infamous in our little circle in that we turn everything into a photoshoot. So we took over the Jordan Store amongst the media preview and training (sorry y'all) to strike a few poses in my new kicks to give you an idea of how they look on foot. I'm sure I'll be shooting again in more than one outfit, but here's a taste before they release this Saturday.

Once in awhile in the vast depths of the internet, a meme explodes and becomes part of social media culture. The MJ crying face meme is now not just a mainstay when it comes to sports memes - we've seen the entire Clippers' roster crying, LeBron James on the court last NBA finals all sporting MJ's face. But now, it's become the universal struggle face photoshopped onto reaction photos with the quickness.

Leave it to sports lifestyle brand UNDRCRWN to take it to a new meta level with their MJ Crying crewneck which features the GOAT complete with tears and red eyes on a black sweater. shegotgame: Sneakers for good - RISE for PUMA "New York is for Lovers" Collection

Sneakers may seem like a frivolous purchase to some, but they can also be used as a conduit for philanthropic endeavours. Nike is own for their Dorebecher program while adidas is assisting universities and colleges with changing their mascots from culturally insensitive to acceptable. It's not always easy for smaller boutiques to do ambitious collaborations that are also for a good cause but the team from RISE in Long Island, New York is leading by example.

Entitled "New York is for Lovers", the boutique's latest collaboration with PUMA is being released on Worlds AIDS Day. The collection includes an almost fully red "Blaze of Glory" sneaker (red is the official color of amFAR and World AIDS Day). The sneaker has a red leather upper with suede overlays and mesh collar. The apparel features four key pieces - the Marlo stretch woven terry pants, a tee, the Bodie oversized velour hoodie and the RISE for Golden Bear varsity jacket.

The other key piece is the RISE for HEX "New York is for Lovers" sneaker duffle bag - that's also carry-on safe (yay!). There's an area for clothing, faux fur tech devices area for laptops, tablets and phones, and two footwear compartments. The bag and the hoodie are by far my favorite pieces from the collection as they're versatile with an unique touch.

But it's not merely the colorway that may remind sneakerheads and streetwear fans to remember World AIDS Day - it's the storytelling behind the pieces. I'll let Chase, one of the co-founders of RISE, explain the story behind the heartfelt collaboration and how both the store and PUMA are being agents for change.


People we love are dying.

Since HIV/AIDS appeared in the 1980s thousands of New Yorkers and tens of millions around the world have been devastated by these infections. They are spread by sharing needles, unprotected sex, and childbirth, but the biggest contributor to infection is ignorance.

Only through candid conversations about the reality of these diseases can we hope to stop their spread. Only by constantly re-engaging these difficult discussions can we stop this from dismantling more lives. In 2015 it’s possible to live with these infections and build a life with little or no interruption thanks to the tireless work of organizations like amfAR whose research has done so much to change the way we treat these diseases.

Science has changed a lot since 1994, when my Father was taken by this illness. I was only 10 years old. And, I lost him. My family lost him, and it was entirely avoidable. This path doesn't have to be walked by anyone else... not anymore. "New York Is For Lovers" is our collective effort to put these illnesses behind us, and to inspire those who are living with it every day.

PUMA has proven the ideal partner for this project of awareness. Where many other brands were confused or turned off by the aggressive and honest nature of what we wanted to say, PUMA rightfully saw the unique potential for an important conversation centered around the idea that we can help.

Together, we are making a $15,000 donation to amfAR that is not tied to sales, proceeds, or percentages. For us it's not a way to flash PR on our shoes or our brand. Instead we’re using the social force of footwear collaborations as a tool to lift others up away from the fate that millions have already found, and change the path of those already there.

"I love New York" is more than just a slogan for shopping bags, it’s a way of life. To love New York is to love New Yorkers, all New Yorkers. Every banker, busker, and bus boy. By educating each other and looking at these issues honestly and seriously we are fighting to erase stigma, empower our friends, and remember the ones we’ve lost. To really know someone is to love them. We invite you to know those engaged with us in this fight.

shegotstyle: Styling Bo Jackson's Air Trainer SC 1s on his birthday (because I'm a narcissist)

November 30th is a special date. Yes, it is the last day of a somewhat odd, depressing month but more importantly - it's Bo Jackson's birthday. So naturally, I'm going to do the narcissistic stylist thing and showcase myself while attempting to pay tribute to the infamous athlete. 

I picked up this pair while in New York during the summer of 2013. I had wanted a pair FOREVER given that Bo Jackson was one of my favorite athletes growing up and that it's such a classic silhouette. The "Auburn" colorway pays tribute to Jackson's time at aforementioned Auburn University where he won a little award called the Heisman Trophy and was a two-time All-American. Jackson is the only athlete to be an All-Star in two sports leagues - the NFL and the MLB (sorry, MJ). The trainer is unique as it's multidiscipline shoe perfect for a freak athlete like Jackson. Also: top five Nike ad campaign ever, especially from a wardrobe/art direction standpoint. 

I grew up playing all kinds of sports (terribly) so the shoe's always appealed to me - I'm the kid that won effort awards for trying hard and never quitting or shutting the hell up. However, the silhouette is a bit bulky and high and given that I am also short AND bulky, it's a little difficult to style.

I decided to go with a feminine silhouette using sportier and more urban textiles and designs. The neoprene skirt, made for both the runway and the water (in theory) mixed with bright Auburn-esque lace bodysuit and a different kind of jean jacket is a different way to wear a trainer than say leggings and a tee. Pro tip: the a-line shape of the skirt and the shorter herm while wearing it at my natural waist and a body hugging bodysuit balances me out while making my legs look longer than they are so they aren't dwarfed by serious sneakers. Touchdown, homerun or both? You decide!

shegotfit: Nike Live Crate Workout #GETOUTHERE

On Saturday evening, I finally braved the cold, dark Canadian evening and checked out the Nike Live Crate in downtown Toronto for an outdoor High intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout. This season Nike launched the #GETOUTHERE campaign in North America featuring athletes from both Canada and the US braving the elements to stay fit and earn the all important sweat equity. I’ve always been into playing sports, less into going to the gym. I tend to either get bored of routine or sometimes anxious and judged in the stereotypical gym atmosphere. I’m also a bit of modern nomad so it’s tough for me to commit to one workout regime in one city. I started using the Nike Training Club (NTC) app when it launched as it allows me to do strength training, yoga, pilates and other workouts no matter where my travels took me - to my parents’ house, to couch surfing in New York to being home in Toronto. The NTC workouts at Academy of Lions take their app from off your iPhone to IRL and certainly feel both more punishing and more effective.

I’ve been checking out the NTC workouts through blogger friends and saw that they were launching the new campaign. Thankfully, I was in Toronto over the weekend so despite the chilly temps, wet snow and rain and mild anxiety thanks to doing an advanced workout while being photographed, I headed down. After all, I’ve recently gotten back into running and outdoor fitness and I’m always up for learning new ways to stay warm in Canada’s often frigid temperatures.

The Nike Live Crate at 229 Richmond Street West is an actual shipping crate that features Nike iD design desks, outtfit grid-style layouts of gear for lifestyle, running and training for men and women along with plenty of iPads to play with all the iD options. It was like a smaller version of what was set up for the Nike Women’s 15KM - except with the options to iD product and of course, emphasizing that nike.com now ships to Canada (finally!) 

For the actual #GETOUTHERE workout, we got to try out the new Nike out brand new winter ready gear with our customized locker that included (for the ladies) a bra, tank, hoodie, vest, leggings and shoes as well as a branded towel and water bottle that we got keep. There was a photographer, DJ Feelgood Smalls spinning uptempo tunes like “Hotline Bling” and “Sorry Remixes” and because it’s Nike - even a drone was filming us. I suddenly realized why many of the girls were wearing make up - sweating isn’t cute, y’all. But it sure was worth it!

We did about an hour workout in front of the crate right on Richmond Street as the wet snow and rain came down and people passing by stopped to gawk. Eva Redpath, Canada’s Nike Master Trainer and Ryan Lauderdale, Nike Master Trainer from Los Angeles along with two professional long jump and running athletes as well as assitant trainers that I’ve worked out with before at the Academy of Lions NTC classes. I tend to do the beginner or intermediate workouts on the NTC app so this certainly motivated me to step my fitness game up at home. We did a dynamic warm up that featured plenty of running, high knees, butt kicks and lunges. There were one legged squats to push ups, plenty of plank variations, sprints, partner work and as always, a jumping group photo. Everyone seemed to work up a great sweat despite the chilly temps.

Being a Nike gear and footwear nerd, the wear test experience is a major part of these free workouts. Here’s a real breakdown of how I felt about the fit, style and performance of the apparel and footwear (all prices in CAD):

Nike Pro Fierce bra - $60 - this bra features comfortable, medium support, I didn’t notice any extra bounciness so I would wear it for similar cross training and perhaps running. I wear a size 32D or 32DD regularly and wore a size medium and the fit seemed fine. 

Nike Get Fit tank - $48 - I keyed in the wrong address in my Uber (oops) and I ended up two blocks away from the crate. So thanks to my airhead mistake, I was a few minutes late. In my rush to change (and need to take a few snaps, obviously), I didn’t put the tank on. It may have helped a bit with wicking but unfortunately I can’t evaluate it. It looks cute and felt soft though!

Nike Pro Hyperwarm Limitless hoodie - $150 - I liked this fit of this piece, I wore a size small and I’m 5’3ish and 130lbs, the fit seemed fine. It certainly kept me warm and I didn’t notice it showing too much sweat. It certainly kept me drier than some cheaper DriFit-style tops by brands like Uniqlo. I might consider buying it.

Nike Pro Hyperwarm Limitless tights - $150 - These leggings were incredibly comfortable and fit well in size small, I may have been able to size up as I carry a lot of weight in my legs, butt and hips. However, I didn’t find them binding, or the waist gapping - a problem I have with most leggings. They were warm and super flexible and allowed for ease of movement as well. The only downside - the camel toe and the price. 

Nike Therma-Sphere vest - $180 - The material of this vest - the Therma-Sphere high tech material is water resistant, incredibly warm and soft to the touch. I ended up taking mine off half part way through the work out as I got incredibly warm. I wore a small and may have sized up with all the layering. While I like the vest, I think I'd prefer the jacket version ($215) for the cold Canadian winter as I find jackets to be more practical. The neoprene-like warmth might be too much for those with a more mild winter. 

Nike Free Cross Compete training shoe - $125 - I demoed them in a size 5.5 which fit me snug, how I prefer my fitness shoes to fit. However, if you like to wear insoles in your training shoes, I'd size up a half size. I like the Free Cross Compete, the grip seemed decent in the rain however, I don't know if the Nike Free sole is right for me as I have a high arch, the Free sole is flexible but not necessarily very supportive. 

Out of all the gear I tried, I’d be most likely to pick up the Hyperwarm hoodie or tights, although $150 for each piece is a little steep but they did perform well and kept me warm throughout the workout. 

I had a great time at the Nike Live Crate #GETOUTHERE work out and would certainly do it again. Unfortunately the crate is now off to Vancouver so the west coast can get the Nike Live experience. Nike Toronto is running outdoor workouts on top of the Bell Lightbox for the next four weeks and you can sign up for free at nike.com/Toronto. If I’m in town, I’m going to be there, enjoying every minute of the burn. Once I get over my fear of running with super fit, incredibly fast people and feeling like an asthmatic snail, I’ll join a neighbourhood Nike Run Club (NRC) too. The social aspect and coaching really does make a difference as the usual podcasts and trap music I usually listen to while working out solo can get a little lonely after awhile.
